City of Cape Town Fire Safety By-law: What Applies
- Extinguisher servicing. Only an SABS permit holder or a holder of an SAQCC certificate of competence may fill, recharge, repair, inspect or test extinguishers, and owners may not let anyone else do it (section 17).
- Loan units. An extinguisher may only be taken away for servicing if a similar working unit is left in its place (section 17).
- Fire protection systems. Systems must be tested and maintained regularly with records kept, and the City's fire service must be told when a system is out of service and when it is restored (section 18).
- Evacuation plans. Schools, hospitals, hotels, guest houses, hostels and similar premises with more than 25 people, including staff, need an emergency evacuation plan, tested in full at least every six months (section 23).
- Population certificate. Premises used for entertainment or public assembly with more than 50 people, including staff, need one before use (section 21).
- Flammable substance certificate. Needed to store or use more than 100 kg of flammable gas, such as LPG, or more than 200 litres of flammable liquid (section 37).

What Affects Quotes in Cape Town
- Travel and collection. Some providers collect and return free within a set distance of their workshop and charge beyond it. Ask how your suburb is priced.
- Loan units. The by-law requires a working unit to be left when one is removed, so check loan units are included.
- Access. High-rise buildings, loading bays, parking and after-hours work in offices and malls add time.
- Exposed equipment. Units and reels outdoors, especially near the sea, may need cabinets or covers and earlier replacement.
- Number of units. Per-unit prices usually drop on larger sites and maintenance contracts.
